I was caught stealing from my place of employment. An audio-recorded interview was conducted by a loss prevention specialist in the main office. I paid the cost of the merchandise I had taken at the end of the interview and was made aware that I would be asked to pay civil demand, which I agreed to. During the interview, I was informed that the retail establishment in which I worked had seen my actions via pinhole CCTV cameras, which are essentially not visible. Although well aware that the sales area was monitored via CCTV stills, I was unaware of surveillance in the stock areas. Having done some loss prevention work myself, I was under the impression that all employees must be made aware of all surveillance in the facility; I was never told about the cameras in the back. Is it legal for them to monitor employees and/or patrons without their knowledge? Thanks.
