Hello,
So I just recently moved out of an apt. complex. Here is a brief of what happened.
I always hate moving out and wait till the last minute. This time was no exception. I knew it was going to be a long day so I went down to the apartment office to get a confirmation when the key was to be turned in. I was told it was midnight. The night went on and I was done by 11pm. I turned my key in and assumed everything was cool. Well a few weeks later I get a collections notice charging me for unpaid utilities and cleaning fees, also anothers day rent was added. I am fine paying the cleaning fees and the utilities, it's the day rent that I'm having the problems with. So I called the landlord as directed and had a frustrating discussion. He told me I have to pay the extra day rent because my key wasn't in before 6pm. I told him that I was told by the office the deadline was midnight. He told me I recieved the keys by the time the office closed therefore it was only fair that I turned them in by that time. I went to the apartment office again to confirm. Again they were on my side and stated that the key was to be turned in by midnight. I am frustrated. How can this landlord have contradicting policies from the managers? Is there a federal or state law, or is there a landlord policy on key turn in times? I live in Oregon and would appreciate any advice or solutions.
thx much,
Mike
