I live in Indiana and am on section 8. During my meeting with Human Services for our annual recert, the property manager informed me, in front of everyone, that she did not need to see me about signing a new lease. I asked why and she stated that my file was under evaluation.
Well, I'm not stupid. I knew that she was not happy with me because I had gone over her head to the main office concerning issues with neighbors that she had been reluctant to deal with. I felt that she was probably looking for a reason to force me to move.
After almost two weeks and no word, I inquired of the regional property manager. If I was going to have to move I needed to know. I finally received a letter four days later from the property manager stating that I have not observed their reasonable policies. My lease will not be renewed. The official reason given was, "Impede our ability to conduct business."
There was no attempt to speak with me about the issues we had or anything. I have asked for an explanation of the reason given but they have not responded.
I have gone through the steps necessary to transfer my voucher to another property. I'm currently in a holding pattern while busy packing. I have to be out by the end of October.
I've been told that the property has every right not to renew my lease the same as I have. I guess I understand that. What I don't understand is how they can do this to someone who is on disability and assistance, and for reasons that are so vague. I have no money to hire an attorney even if I had a leg to stand on. And even if I could fight it and win I'm not sure I'd even want to stay here. But I think I've been mistreated. There are others here who complain about every single little thing. They call several times a week about something. I figure the only reason they aren't being treated like this is because they're elderly. I'm 51. I'd appreciate some thoughts on the matter. Thanks.
