Default Mentally Ill Runaway Teen, Ohio to Texas

Ok...this is gonna be a long one...

A child 15 1/2 years old. Already charged in the with 6 felonies. Non-violent. Pleads out, to 3 of them. Gets 1 year probation in lieu , has to attend in home counseling, take meds, attend camp until school, yada yada.. in lieu incarseration at ODYS. This child has Bipolar a new diagnoses, with other disabilities that are preexisting. Courts are aware. This is why he would be in ODYS , mental lockup versus other facilities.

He was locked up pending trial, for over a month due to being suicidal, cutting himself etc.

He gets out, screws up everything. Violates probation, has an active warrent, and is now listed as a runaway from the parent he was living with. The parent whom he resides with has tried to catch him to get him locked up and back on med, with the help of friends.Thier concern is that the police can't seem to catch him, because he is sick but not stupid, he is actually very intelligent. The parents now fear...that he is becoming increasingly more suicidal because he knows the walls are closing in. Less of his friends are helping him due to his legal troubles and mental illness. In fact he just became aware they have called and given up his location several times because they are scared for him.

They have become worried because his suicidal tendiencies are increasing each time they attempt to catch him and he is running out of places to go. The friends he stays with are the bottom of the barrel, and more dangerous. He has threatned, if he is caught he will make the police shoot him before they get him in the car, and if they do, he will kill himself in jail. Because the situation has been going on for months, they are starting to entertain another possiblity. They are not happy about.

The other parent lives in Texas, and is possibly willing to take the child to get him back on medication, in therapy , and try to get him straightend out.....so they are thinking about getting him there. The other parent would have to make sure he got there, and possibly provide a few days of keeping the child at home..before having them transported...

    So here are my questions:

What are the consequences for the parent(s) of doing this, considering the circumstances?

Would the charges show up in Texas, if he was to get in trouble for something?

Would Ohio bother extraditing this child all the way from Texas should he get caught?

Heck they didn't even look for him when the warrent was issued? Not one time until they were called by the parent...who asked them to look..and to be aware he was mentally ill, how to catch him etc. They of course went rushing off, and apparently didn't listen, because he saw them coming...nice

Is there a statute of limitations on these charges?
The felonies are B&E, 2 charges of theft.

Will it carry over once he turns 18? meaning if he went back to Ohio would they arrest him as an adult?

I am not happy about either situation they find themselves in?
    It's a catch22.

I understand thier wanting him to face his responsibilites and serve his time, but due to the inablity for the police to actually get him, and his increasinly dangerous mental state? I don't even know what to say.

It would be horrible if he ended up dead..

I would at least like the legal aspects, and ramifications, to let them know...

    Thanks ....

I would let the parents handle the situation and obtain their own legal advice.

You are attempting to give advice and/or get involved in a situation that is not your business.

What do you think the child and his parents would think about you posting their personal business on a forum?

The parents need to deal with the fact that the minor is on probation, rather than trying to hide the minor from the justice system. They may wish to discuss their problems with the probation officer, or get help from a lawyer who offers representation to juvenile offenders, to try to work out an appropriate resolution.

    Deadlock....

I think I have seen plenty of people here asking the same questions, for others. Your assumptions that I am just someone that is a busybody, doesn't have permission or perhaps is related to the family is rather annoying.

If you are not going to offer the advice or share something similiar that might have happened to you, or someone you know to help or show why it didn't work or did...then why don't you keep your opinion to yourself and move on to another post.

I happen to be a Moderator on another forum. And you really defeat the entire purpose of this one, don't you? If you don't have an answer , then stay out of my post and find someone who you can help or annoy or doesn't mind taking the time to read your post and discover they have wasted their time. .

BTW...I posted this in the 3rd person for a reason, to have the advice given without people talking to me as a parent. Logic not feeling. I am one of the parents. And if I didn't have respect for forums in general , and for the Mods and Admin that run them. I would personally tell you what I thought of the waste of time your reply has been. But then again, I don't waste my time on people who are obviously not here to help others. And I don't waste my time on flaming people.

I happen to be Bipolar myself. I happen to have had some of the same things happen to me as did my child, and a second chance, with therapy, and medication, and away from the original place, gave me a life. While it's not involving absconding...there was a lot involved. I regret only that I didn't do it earlier. I live a rather successful life now, and am a responsible law abiding citizen. This is not a decision I take lightly. My son's life could be at stake. Responsiblities, not withstanding.

So until then..do me another favor, walk a mile in my shoes then spout off., otherwise move on..to troll in someone elses posts.

Aaron. on the otherside of the coin. I appreciate your post. This is a battle that seems surreal , being caught between good and evil. I work in a highly successful law firm, however, I keep my personal business far away. Calling the probation officer is something I have been considering.
If this child was not so ill. If he had not tried to kill himself several times and not been successful. He would be sitting in jail now. Courtesy of me.
An attorney is not really an option to hire. Or I would not have come here..for some advice or sharing of similiar stories to get some opinions to get some perspective...I have NOT made a decision. You have given me something to think about futher. It's appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Nevergiveuphope,
Ok so what are you today? Mother of a teen who is helping a 17-year old Abused Stray Kid

“Ok now I am a mother of a teenager. Who instead of bringing home stray animals brings home stray teenagers.

For 2 weeks this kid has snuck in and out to sleep.”
    (that was April 2007)

or are you the father of a 15 1/2 year old with 6 felonies whose one parent is in Texas and you are where? Ohio? No. You made that up? You’re in Alabama?

And you are a forum moderator today? A very successful law firm employee yesterday? Or are you the 17 year old runaway abused kid?

How could anybody walk in your shoes? We don’t have a clue about who you ARE!!

Frankly, I think you need to take your meds. Then hire an attorney instead of playing games on this forum.

Better yet… don’t hire an attorney. Go take a poll on YOUR FORUM and see what the group thinks you should do about your kid, or the kid your kid dragged in or the kid down the street you’re watching……………

You can ignore anybody you wish through your user control panel (UserCP).

Did you have a question at this point?

Thank you Aaron. I will do just that.

Yes I wanted to see if there are links ....or something .....for the answers to the specific questions in my original post.
This is going to help with some of the perspective.
