Question Employer's Distinction Between Job Applicants' Engineering Degrees

    Hi,

I am a 40+ Veteran and live in New Jersey and I have applied for a position with the State of New Jersey Department of Personnel. They were hiring for Electrical Engineering Trainee and the only announcement requirements was a degree (EE) in Electrical Engineering.
I have a (EET) Electical Enginering Technology and they told me that they are not accepting it. They said I was ineligible because my engineering degree focuses more on applications vs theoretical.

Is there anything I can do about this decision? Please respond ... thanks

No it sounds like they want an engineer with an engineering degree,as a prerequisite to hiring. Your education does not satisfy the prerequisite.

Agree, you do not have any type of "case." The employer did nothing illegal. They had every right not to hire you - you did not meet their hiring requirements.

    HHmmm, let's see;

they said an EE was a requirement.

You do not have an EE.

You do not fulfill the requirements of the position as posted.

Was there something else you left out of your post? It sounds too simple to me.

    Hello Folks,

I have two short follow up points:

Keep in mine this is a (state trainee position)

    1. The point here is Electrical Engineering is Electrical Engineering, the technology extension means you have more hands-on lab credits.

    2. From a legal point of view no options please, can the same be said for a job posting requiring a High School education Diploma, vs. a GED?

There maybe a difference in having and not having a college degree, but my question is what good is electrical engineering vs. electrical engineering technology college degree after you get it

Here's what you don't appear to understand.

1.) They do not owe you a job.

2.) "Discrimination" based on differing degrees is not illegal.

You can argue the point till the cows come home and the answer is still going to be the same. Nothing illegal has transpired; you have no legal grounds to force them to accept your degree if it is not what they want.

Yes the employer can require a High school diploma over a G.E.D,and some do.

Here's the deal the state personnel department denied my rights to appeal their decision... they can not have their cake and eat it too. I write a letter threating instant legal action and today they reversed there decision sending my appeal forward to the Merit Systems Board.

My agrument before the Board will be based on engineering field of study the state must consider both degrees to be equal therefore I do in fact meet the application educational requirements i.e a BS in Electrical Engineering is equal to a Electrical Engineering Technology.
The hidden issue is was I must have appeal rights and I did so now they must defend your weak position.

    Comments welcome!

    Good luck.

I have visited about a half dozen schools websites and looked at the curriculum for both an EE and an EET. Sorry to say but from what I saw, there is a huge difference between the two degrees. As they told you, the EET deals with hands on while the EE is theory. Without theory, you do not have the background to design circuits from scratch.

But, best of luck to ya.

As an electrical engineer and being about 5 years of experience in my job searches I've more or less noticed that EET's tend to not open as many doors as the full degree.

It's similar but requirements are requirements. Not that i haven't seen some positions claim one or the other is okay.

On the same hand an employer can also say "BSEE from an ABET accredited school". You might have a BSEE but if the school isn't an ABET school you'd be out of luck.
