    Default Delayed Medical Billing

I underwent a medical procedure in June 2006. I received a statement on 9/1/2007 billing me for the charges on my account. There were 3 charges listed on this statement. The 1st is the doctor's actual billing, which occurred on 8/1/06. The 2nd is the insurance company out-of-network payment on 9/21/06. The 3rd is the insurance write-off provided by the doctor's office on 9/21/06.

Since I never received any bills prior to this bill on 9/1/2007 and the charges are over 1 year old, which precludes me from appealing to my insurance provider for additional payment on this bill, am I required to pay it?

I don't think it's fair of them to send me an initial bill 14 months after the surgery!

Am I obligated to pay this?!?!

By the way - this bill is from a doctor's office in NJ, where I live.

Have you tried to discuss this with your insurance company?

You are responsible for remitting payment for your portion of the bill. A year from the date of service does seem unusually long to wait to bill a patient, but there may be a legitimate reason the bill was delayed. Call the Doctor's office and ask to speak with the office manager.
