    Default Michigan Teen Caught Shoplifting

I am 16 years old and I was caught shoplifting $120 worth of merchandise from a Kohls store about 3 months ago in Michigan. The police were called and my mom had to come pick me up. The police officer didn't do anything, but I signed a paper saying if I wanted to enter a Kohls store before I was 18 it would have to be with a parent or gaurdian. They took my picture for the system and told me about the civil charges I would have to pay. I think they also said something about going to court. I recieved the civil thing, and paid the $200 out of my own pocket, but haven't heard anythign since. Does this mean that they aren't taking criminal actions? Also is my school going to be notified beucase I play a sport and am extremely worried about the concequences. This was a huge mistake and I wish I could take it back. Since I can't I am only trying to deal with everything that is happening the best I can. The worst part is how much I dissapointed my parents. What is a diversion program, and is there one in Michigan? What can I do ?? Also will this affect applying to colleges next year when I become a senior?

Until you get a court date I would not worry. Since you have no courtdate you can assume no charges were filed. You can also ocntact PD or courts and ask if charges were filed

So there is a chance that no charges were filed even though the police came? The civil demand thing said that even if i paid the fine, that didn't mean they couldn't take further criminal action. So to find out I would just call the PD and they would give me the information? THank you very much for your help!

If you want to know what happened through the police, I would suggest ordering a copy of the police report. If the investigation remains "open" they won't give you a copy, and if it is closed it will typically have an entry at the end which explains what the prosecutor did when the matter was referred for review for possible charges.

How do I order a copy? If they were going to take criminal action(who is this up to, Kohls or the Police Dept.?) Wouldn't they have notified me? Or is there a large chance it is still being waited upon?
