Default Denied Employment Because of Credit Check

I was very recently denied employment because of a credit check a company had run. They said that I would get a letter in the mail next week explaining exactly what it was. It's killing me to wait. I live in Ohio and the company is located in Texas. I do not understand how I can be refused employment because of my credit report,,,, not criminal report but credit report..........how can this be legal.
Any help or advice will be Greatly appreciated.

Yes, it's legal. Just to give you one example - an employer may deny employment to an applicant after reviewing their credit hx (& it's "adverse") if the job would require the applicant to handle fairly large sums of money. They can deny employment to you for any reason that is not a legally protected reason such as age, sex, religion . . .

WOW! Betty that is incrediable. I have to confess that I have a poor credit rating due to being sick with Endometriosis and severe depression I can not work much. (26 to 37 hours a week.) Thank God I have a somewhat fair employer, cheap but fair. I also handle large sums of money and have for the passed 15 years.

Maybe your employer hasn't done a credit check since your rating became poor or if they did, they hired you or kept you anyway. The thing is - they can legally not hire a person & can terminate a person based on a credit check. I'm glad your employment seems to be going ok.

Unhappy Re: Denied Employment Because of Credit Check

    Thanks Betty,

Not really what I wanted to hear .

    but thanks.

So they can do it, but that does not make it right.
There is absolutley nothing what so ever listed on my criminal check for the past 10 years but I can be denied employment for a couple of poor financial decisions.

Whatever happend to innocent until prooven guilty ?
They just used my credit report against me to prove my guilt ?

I am a veteran of the US military, at one time or another I have been responsible for Millions of dollars worth of equipment but you won't find that listed on my credit report anywhere.

    Anyway,

    Thanks
