We have one female in maintenance dept. where I work, other than our secretary. She originally was the helper to the only female HVAC mechanic that we had but the mechanic would not work half the time and eventually resigned. Since that time the female helper has basically been allowed to just float around where she wants , she worked electrical for awhile , now she wants back in HVAC because she thinks she can make mechanic, thus get a raise. So we have a meeting and the boss states that she is coming back to HVAC. Me and the other three male mechanics state that we are not comfortable working in the close confines that we sometime have to, with a female. So the boss says that he is going to rotate her with every mechanic on a monthly basis. I make this exact statement " I don't believe that HVAC is a good carreer match for women, due to the physical requirements". After this statement by me, the woman in question proceeds to attack my credibility and my work ethic with some false accusations. In about two days I get a letter from my boss accusing me of sexual discrimination and saying this kind of behavior will not be tolerated by me and the others. The woman in question has never been denied a job opportunity, since she was merely moving around within the dept.,and we currently have no mechanic openings. She is not currently qualified if we had an opening because she lacks proper credentials. I also have not actually refused to work with her, I just said that I prefered not to, especially now that she has openly attacked me and place me in a rather hostile environment. So , bottom line , could what I said be construed as sexual discrimination, even though I am not actually the employer?
