Default Do You Have To Appear in Court if You Aren't Subpoenaed

In Virginia, does a witness have to be subpoenaed for a civil trial? Or can a witness be called and just say he will be at the trial? I guess if no subpoena was issued and the witness did not show, there could be no legal action taken on the witness.

    Thanks,
    Jim

If a party wishes to compel a witness to appear in court, they need to issue a subpoena.
