Today I received a letter from a K.T. Communications of PA stating that I have unpaid 900 pay per call phone calls from my home number (which was actually disconnected about 4 months ago because I now just use my cell phone). It says that I owe $243.89, and that "since you are listed as the legal owner of the phone number, you are responsible for the payment". It goes on to say that in order to 'close out the account' (they don't provide an account number on the letter) that I have to send full payment, provide a police report stating that I did not authorize the calls, or make a payment plan with the company. Then it says that if I don't do this, they will report me to credit agencies or file a claim with municipal court at which time they will add fees to my account, AND put an additional $350 charge for attorney expenses onto my account also, and that 'all debts will be placed on my credit report'. Then it says that if I disregard, legal action will be taken against me. I tried to call and the 'customer service rep' said that she could not give me any information on the specifics of the calls made, dates, etc. and that she would have their legal and fraud departments call me on Monday. I don't know what the hell is going on. I have never made a 900 call on that number which has been out of service for months, and even if I did wouldn't it show up on my phone bill? Also, who exactly haven't I paid? I don't know how 900 calls work - don't you have to provide a credit card number or something and wouldn't that have shown up on one of my cards?? The thing that scares me is if this is a scam, then these jerks can report me to a credit agency and mess up my credit report. Does this sound like a fraud? What should I do?
