I understand this sort of post is rather common here, but I'm taking all the information I can get.
To put it rather shortly - I was arrested (as the title states) for possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana in Texas (actual amount was around a gram). Said offense occurred in Denton county.
Most of the information I've received suggests I'll get a sentence of probation with community service and a drug treatment class. I have no qualms with this, understand that I made a mistake and intend to complete all conditions of probation should it be offered.
I am most concerned about my record, future job opportunities, etc. I am currently a graduate student studying English literature and creative writing, and it was/is a goal of mine to become a professor of such in the future. Is there any way - after successful completion of probation - to have the charge removed from my record? I have no criminal history, barring a traffic ticket I am currently on deferred adjudication for.
I'm 23, graduated Magna Cum Laude (from my undergraduate institution), have plenty of letters of recommendation and people willing to vouch for my integrity. Is there any action I might take to ensure that, given a reasonable amount of time for reparations, this charge will not preclude a career in academia? In the professional world?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I have secured a lawyer who specializes in helping students, but as stated above - I'm looking for all the information I can get.
Thanks,
John
