    Default Crime and Illegal Immigrants

I live in North Carolina, a state that is now within the top 10 in the country as far as illegal immigrant population. Ten years ago in my town we had less than 8 police officers, now we have over 40, the population as far as Legal Citizens has not doubled, but virtually all of the growth is from legal/non-legal hispanics. Thefts, gangs, shootings, graffiti and murders are all up 10 times more than those #'s ten years ago when my town consisted of a predominately white lower middle class/farmers. In fact I don't recall a time where there was a murder previous to our new arrivals. Also our schools used to be tops in the county, but now we are virtually at the bottom as far as grades, pass rates go. Recently the news paper out of the capitol city ran a report on the increase in Hispanic DUI's in the state, in a state with a population of 9 million people, less than 500,000 are hispanic. Hispanics accounted for over 40% of all DUI occurances. My question is why do people not want to keep these people from crossing our borders? Is money really worth the degradation of our towns and our country? I have worked with illegal and legal immigrants and to be quite honest none of the ones I have ever come a cross give a rat's ass about this place. Just send the money back home. Finally, if it is soo bad in their previous country of residence, why don't they get off they're lazy asses, go back home and create a better place for their families and countrymen, fight to make it better, that's what my forefathers did for this country. All I ever hear is "it's so bad in my country", and "I cannot feed my family in my country" I guess the soil is too useless in their country to grow their own food to feed their families. I guess no one cares anymore.

I wasn't trying to be racist, but I could see how it looks that way. I was just merely stating the facts that have been proven in my area. What proof do you have as far as white people causing problems in your area? Just wondering.

You do sound like you are anti-hispanic. The only real crime increase you stated was DUI's associated with the hispanic population in your state, which as you state has an increase in population. By what factor did the state's population of hispanics increase? Is the number of DUI's an increase in percentage for the hispanic population or is it an increase for the entire population?

You are throwing out alot of statements that really are speculation and don't mean anything unless you can provide valid statistics the indicate there is a real problem in your community because the statistics are directly related to the hispanic population.

"Thefts, gangs, shootings, graffiti and murders are all up 10 times more than those #'s ten years ago"- the rate has increased in almost every city in this country. Some people blame it on lack of morality, not hispanics.

Your schools are not the only ones with kids having behavioral problems. Some would blame the Asian population for more recent problems.

I guess if you want to complain about the hispanic dui's, go ahead. But what do you think might be a cause for this recent increase and what would you suggest as a solution to improve (decrease the dui rate) in your community?

    I'll answer your questions first.

My question is why do people not want to keep these people from crossing our borders?
I don't believe they should be kept from crossing our borders but rather should receive more assistance from us in immigrating to the US..

Is money really worth the degradation of our towns and our country?
I don't understand what you are trying to say. Do you think that US citizens are making money? How does degradation of our towns and country fit in here? I don't see the correlation.

Points well taken, I am not anti-hispanic, I am anti-illegal immigration. I realize not all legal and illegal immigrants are latinos, but in my area they are the vast majority. Also are a disproportionate part of the problems arising in my area. I live in a small town, everyone who grew up here went to church, school and played sports together. White, black and the occasional "other" races. We all know our town, it's history and how much different and safer it was a few years ago. We have had a small influx of white and black into our community, but less than a couple hundred. The largest increase has been by migrant workers who work the tobacco and corn fields. There was no "other side of the RR tracks."
Here are a few unspeculated facts on NC, since I haven't found the town facts as of yet, although I know from what I see and hear around here.
-Hispanic population (no way of knowing whether legal or illegal, so I'll watch what I write) 6% of state total population, 27.5% of the population growth between 1990 and 2004. 57% of total k-12 school enrollment growth between 2000 and 2004.
    -Taxes paid $756 million/year
-Taxes used $817 million/year in just Education, Health Care and Correction costs.
-Net COST to state taxpayers $61 million. essentially each hispanic resident of NC costs the state $102 per year.
-The DUI remark I made was from a tv news report a few months back, as far as tangible numbers I could find its in the 20-30% range, remember this is 6% of the state population. Either way it is an unnecessary and disproportionate number, no matter pink, purple, red, black, brown, yellow, green or white it's all disgraceful.
-I also believe that immorality is a driving force for the increase in all crime stats nationwide. But in the local weekly newspaper which I read weekly, most crime reports listed don't have the names of people I went to school with or have "anglo" names for that matter.
-As far as what to do to decrease DUI #'s, maybe learn the laws of the host country, Driving Laws are also available in spanish. The booklets sit in the DMV branch in the next town east of here, and there are two stacks, English and Spanish, both of which I can read.
-As far as my border remark, I was definately too broad, but our immigration laws are already pretty fair to the immigrant.
-Yes U.S citizens are making money off of the influx of cheap labor, especially business owners, some of which I have previously worked for.
I was simply stating whether it was worth the cheaper goods and services or money saved, while letting our towns become victims of the all around increases.
Anyways, it would be nice if the positives outweighed the negatives and perhaps soon they will. My opinion is just that, an opinion.

You have done some thinking and researching the issues (and added some substance to your speculations!). When some of these issues, backed with statistics can be supported with instances in your own town you can take them to city council meetings. Raise these issues at school board meetings. Write your congressman and state reps.

I read your post about your work situation. It sounds like the issue you are having is migrant workers who receive less wages, for same work done and are displacing persons who have solid jobs. Nobody likes to be replaced by someone younger, less experienced, maybe an immigrant to this country.

Employers may make money from cheap labor. They also are known to exploit those same persons. And in the long run they lose.

We live well in this country. And we cannot expect that persons who live in poverty won't want the opportunity to live at a higher standard.

If persons who move to the US want a better life they need to follow our laws. These laws aren't different for them. And they are responsible for paying taxes, getting immunizations, and being good citizens. When these persons become members of your community you want them to be responsible, so show them what that means to act responsibly.
