Default Seeking Joint Custody of an Infant in Iowa

I ordered paternity testing on a child born of a casual sexual encounter at college. It was positive.
I sought visitation and custody through a lawyer and have fallen in love with the child. The mother wants child support and sole custody.
The mother controls the visitation schedule, limiting me to an hour or 2 per week.At 7 months she let me be alone with the child for 1 hour.
My family immediately accepted and loves the child.
I want joint physical and custodial custody.
I am a junior in college in Iowa,in debt, no car and an education major.
Do I have a chance at joint custodial in Iowa?
Yesterday the mother had a meltdown when I asked for the child for an overnight visit at my parents house. She said no overnights until 2 1/2 years. Our court date is 8 weeks from now. I want more time with my little girl.

And you will get more time with your little girl.
You are the Dad, you are ENTITLED to 50/50.
You should at LEAST ask for eow ( every other weekend ), and a night or 2 during the week.
The Mom needs to know, that she has zero right to control how, if, and/or when you see your baby girl.
And unless you are a dope of ultimate proportions, you will be awarded Joint custody, with the Mom having physical custody.
She is in for a rude awakening.

There is not an automatic entitlement to 50/50 access.

There's a nice overview of Iowa custody law available here.

I never said it was automatic.
    Big difference.
I was entitled to a fair custody agreement, never got it. But I sure was entitled to it

I am disagreeing with what you said. I don't dispute your clarification that you meant something less absolute.

    Thank you for your input.
As I am researching custody material, it is all about divorcing parents.
Is it different in court, worst for me, that I never had a relationship with the mother. I did not abandon the mother. I was told by my lawyer to stay away from her until the paternity test was back and I was shown to be the father.
I had no contact with the mother until I head she was in labor.
I went to the hospital and she let me hold the baby. She told me when I asked to visit the baby at her parents home that I couldn't see the baby again until after the paternity test came back. I am sure she knew all along that I am the father.
I try to see the baby once a week now, trying to show that I am there for the baby.
For several years now, I have worked at a summer camp for elementary age children. My major is elementary and secondary education. Will that help me in seeking joint custodial custody.
    Thank you.

It probably won't help anymore than if you had another job, as an honest hard working adult.
Don't rely on what you do for a living, to tip the scales your way.
Although working with children may make things easier for you when it comes to your own child.

    Thanks again.
All of the child custody material I am finding online is all about divorcing parents.
Will it be worse for me because I never had a relationship with the mother?
Dose anyone have custody information for non-couples?

I really don't think it matter man.
Whether or not you were married, or if it was a 1 night stand, it won't matter in terms of custody, support, and visitation.
