Question Old Apartment Seeking Rent After Early Move-Out

I live in Ky and back in 2005 I had signed a years lease at this apartment complex. Well needless to say I could no longer afford the rent just after 6 months. I called management and told them the issues I was having and I needed out. She just told me to be out by a certain time, where to leave my keys, pool pass etc. and I wouldn't be liable for anything as long as I sent a letter explaining the situation. So I was out by the date and never heard anything since. Until last month when debt collector contacted my father looking for me. I called them and told them what had happened. She basically didn't believe me and how do my husband and I survive since I'm not working(I took time off to have a baby) I told her none of her buisness. They're saying I owe over $2000 and I told them theres no way we can pay that. Before I quit my job we paid everything off so we would be ok.....Well, I didn;t even think of the apartment place. My question is what can they do? We have nothing we don't own a home I don't work and neither does my husband (full time student) he is in the guard but only one weekend a month. How do they expect to get something from nothing?

The $2,000 represents how many months rent? Was your security deposit also applied to rent? If so, how many months? Did this ever go to court?

Not sure where the $2000 came from I'm assuming it was what was left on the lease. Yes the security deposit was applied and I had 6 months left on the lease. But the manager informed that the letter that I wrote would get me out of the lease. No this has never gone to court. The collecter did send something in the mail stating that if I didn't respond then they could take act on the account.

Well I did some calulations and that $2000 does not equal the rent due amount. I had 6 months left on the lease and that would had equalled like $3900.00. Sure I'm not sure where they're getting $2000.00

That may represent the amount of rent which accrued before they found a tenant to take over the apartment.

Do you have any documentation or other evidence that you were told that you could leave the lease without incurring any penalties or further rent obligation?

Yes I know I should but then again I thought it was done and over with until now. So, what can happen. Does it have to go to court first before they just send someone to take my car etc?
