I am 20 years old. I went to a party in the woods near my town. I stayed there for about 2 1/2 hours, didn't have one drop of alcohol, then found out that I lost my keys somewhere in the woods. I had to get a ride back home with one of my friends because I couldn't find my keys. I had to leave my car in a lot in the woods to come back to it the next morning with another set of keys. I came back the next morning to find that my car was gone.
I came to find out that it was towed, and it was being held until I spoke to the State police about it. After being yelled at by the police last night, I was given a fine for Criminal Trespassing and I was told that I had to pay for the towing fees as well.
Is this legal? Also consider that I was never contacted to move my car that night, that they were just announcing names on a loud speaker of the car owners. Also it is not posted anywhere along the path or in the lot that it is private property and there is no trespassing. Can they do that?
If there is anyway of you giving me a link to the laws that were/weren't broken, that would be great. I just don't want to end up paying a lot of money for something I shouldn't be fined for.
