Default How Can I Add On To My Child's Name

    Hello,
I have a 9 year old son. I live in the state of Virginia. I am a divorced parent. After I divorced, I kept my ex-husband's last name so that my son and I would still have the same last name. I am now remarried, and would like to add my new last name to my son's name without dropping his father's name. My son feels really left out, and I want to do what's best for him. Like I said, I don't want to drop my ex's name, just add on. His father is in his life at times, but not often. Even though his father doesn't see him often, I don't believe that he would consent to me even adding to his name. How can I add to my son's name without him? Please help me.

Either get consent from the child's father, or bring a motion before the court which has jurisdiction over the custody case and attempt to convince the court that the name change is in the child's best interest. Your ex- would be able to oppose any court motion.

Thank you for the response, but I don't understand why I would need to get consent from his father. I only want to add on to my sons name. I have complete sol custody.

It's because your son has two parents.
