Our landlord's son lived in our rental just before we moved in and failed to change his sex offender registry. After 8 months, he changed it to his father's house (our landlord's house). We only found out the son's status a few weeks ago. During the entire last year the mail has been coming for this sex offender and the landlord has been picking it up. The landlord has made at least weekly visits to our rental unannounced for the last year. It got so bad that we put locks on the gate, which he demanded to have the combinations to. So the registered sex offender has had access to our keys and locks at his dad's house the whole time we've been living there! We are very private and careful people and never allowed either man to befriend our children, but what a scare!

Here's the problem: Rumor has it that the landlord has a habit of stealing security deposits from his tenants. We are up to date on rent, have not damaged anything. What tips can you give to help us besides the obvious? We are documenting everything and are prepared to go to court. Can we get all rent paid the last year due to threat of harm? We've already reported to the DOJ for failure to register at the proper address. Oh, and he rents at least 2 other properties that we know of. What a creep!
