Marrying Illegal Immigrant Before N-400 Is Approved

My friend wants to marry his girlfriend who is in the process of obtaining her citizenship. According to INS, her N-400 priority date is still 4 months away.

My friend entered the US legally 8 years ago and overstayed. He has no criminal background nor does he ever faced any deportation proceedings. Is it wise for him/her to marry now or should they wait? Are there any other options for him to get his foot in the legality door?

One of the main issues is that his DL is expiring and the DMV is requesting him to show proof of lawful status, which he can't provide.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

If I were her, I would have no interest in marrying him until after I had obtained citizenship, at which time I could use my citizenship to attempt to adjust his status after marriage. I don't see how marrying her will help him get status prior to that time - is there something I missed?
