I live in the state of Maryland. On the night of July 13, my wife and I went to see a movie and parked the car in the lot at 7:20 pm. When we left the theater at around 10 pm, we saw the following note on our windshield ...
"7/13/07 @ 8:48 pm
I called the police because I noticed that you hit my car & didn't leave a note. I have your car insurance information, pictures of both vehicles & the damage. Please contact the non-emergency police at xxx-xxx-xxxx. Ask for seargent [name redacted]. My insurance company will be contacting you. [first name redacted]"
I quickly looked around our car for damage, but saw none as well as no obvious damage on neighboring cars. However, it was dark, so I will check our car again in the morning. I have no idea what the person is talking about, and for all I know, someone else first received the note and moved it onto our car. However, the phone number in the note does correspond to the local police non-emergency line (we Googled it upon getting home).
I am wondering if this is some sort of fraud attempt and this person is trying to trick us into calling in and registering information on a police report. Moreover, I do not know if it is possible for a private citizen to get our insurance information on the basis of a hearsay claim over the phone presented to either his/her insurance company or the police (presumably having access to only my license tag number or VIN if they were checking through the dashboard window).
Should I just ignore this unless possibly contacted by an insurance company or the police? If this happens, I will immediately hire an attorney. I am primarily concerned that this may be either a common scam technique to engage an unwary party or some 3rd party that is actually guilty moved the note off of their car onto ours.
As a first poster, I appreciate your forbearance. I have been reading posts on the site for the last several hours but did not see this type of incident discussed.
