Question Employer Wants Employee To State A Final Leaving Date

Here's an interesting situation I've found myself in.
My husband is re-enlisting in the Marine Corps. He's been through initial processing, but is waiting on an official offer (this will take 3-5 weeks).

I communicated our decision for re-enlistment to my manager and general manager, with the earliest possibility of leaving in a few months. After this, I was included in a meeting with both managers and asked to pick a final date. My argument to this was the uncertainty of when my husband will be stationed, how long it will take to secure housing at the base, and when I will join him. This process will most likely take a few months. They insisted I pick a final leaving date to "allow for a replacement to be found."

Is it legal for employers to demand a leaving date beyond the generally accepted 2 week notice?

    Thank you!

    Yes, it is.

It would also be legal for them to say, "Thank you for telling us. Today is your last day. Goodbye."
