About 3 months ago my husband and I were approached by a co-worker of his that he has worked with for 15 years. He was leaving to take on a new job in Idaho and wanted to know if we would rent his mobile on 3.86 acres of land with a shop for $1000/month. Of course, this was to good to pass up. However, my husband said that he would like to buy in about a year. That was agreeable to said co-worker. He proceeded to leave to Idaho leaving his wife to move and keep property up. As the months have progressed we repeatedly asked if they were going to be out by July 1 and that the agreed rental price was correct. Both agreed again and again. My husband in the mean time has spent numerous hours helping with the property maintenance, moving heavy tools and equipment in the shop and tearing into an old bathroom to remodel for the wife. Around June 25 the husband called and said that he would like to sell in 6 months at $250,000.00. We have already given notice as of May 31 to our current landlord after making sure with these people that everything was good. They said to go ahead and give notice. We said that we would like to by and the $250K sounded fair but we would like to get an appraisal when it was time to buy and we would not be able to afford to much more than that. On June 27, 2 days prior to moving they contacted us to say they had gotten an appraiser out that day and that the 1974 mobile on 3.86 acres of mostly unusable land said it was worth $340,000.00 and they could sell in a month. I did some research into comparable property and homes and he is wanting at least $150K more than its worth. So of course we can't move in. I want to know if there is any recourse for the amount of time spent / money spent helping them - spending 3 months not looking for real property and of course mental/monetary hardship. By the way because we gave our notice to our current landlord she has chosen to raise our rent another $75/month for us to remain there. Help!:
