    Question MIP in Oregon

I am 20 and just recieved an MIP after being pulled over by a State police officer for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. I had a sixpack of alcohol behind the passenger seat that my roommate(over 21) left at another friends. I was bringing back to my roommate. I had not been drinking and all the bottles were unopened. He wrote me a citation for $421. I have had one other violation, a speeding ticket over 2 years ago, otehrwise a clean record. I am wondering, as I have little experience with this, What the MIp. Is there any hope of reducing/fighting the fine? How does this affect my record/insurance/etc.? Also, does it matter that the bottles were merely in my car, were all sealed and I was a sober as possible? Just hoping to find out more info on this charge. Thanks!

You really need to talk with a lawyer. The circumstances might warrant some consideration but I think it would be a mistake to try to handle it yourself. It does sound a little unusual that your friend would leave beer in your car.

Oregon's laws relating to minors and alcohol are summarized here (PDF Format).
Quote Quoting ORS 471.430 - Minor in possession of alcohol
When minors are in possession of alcohol, they are either holding the alcohol, have consumed the alcohol, or attempted to purchase. They will be referred to juvenile court or cited into circuit court. The minor will be fined, driving privileges will be suspended for up to one year, and/or the minor will have to wait up to one year to apply for a driver license. Juveniles may be sent to an alcohol education course. (Class B Violation)
