Default Shoplifting at a Meijer in Michigan

I was caught when I stole a 16 dollars worth stuff at a Meijer in Michigan at the end of last month. The store's security guys told me that if I cooperated they wouldn't call the police. So I cooperate without a local police coming. I signed a paper saying what happened and was given a civil demand document saying that I have to pay $160. So I mailed the amount next day.

This is the first time that I did it and I have never done anything like this before and have a clean record. I don't know why I did it and I was so stupid. I am so concerned about this mistake and feel so scared that I have many sleepless night. I cannot believe I did it and I am so ashamed of myself. I feel it is so disgusting.

My main concern is if they file a criminal charge against me.
Is there anyone who know what Meijer's policy about shoplifting? It happened about three weeks ago and the price was below 20 bucks.

Is there a certain price limit that Meijer in Michigan file a criminal charge if stuffs' total price goes beyond certain point? I saw a website saying that Target makes a criminal charge if the stuff is worth of $20.

Please help me, I am so ashamed of myself and scared to death.

    Thanks.

There are about 14,927 (more or less) posts on this forum just like yours, including the old "first time" business.

Search a few of those threads and then come back and tell you what you found out.

At sixteen, if they charge you, it would be in juvenile court. You are most likely to be sentenced to probation, possibly with community service.

"This is the first time I did it" almost always translates into "This is the first time I was caught." You will generate skepticism with that claim, even if it is true.

    aaron, thanks for your reply.
I'm an adult, not 16 years old.
What I was saying was it was a 16 bucks stuff which I stole. Without any police called, I signed a couple of papers and was told I have to pay a civil demand within 30 days and "never steal again." Except those, they didn't say anything about criminal charge or something.

Do they file a criminal charge against me with that amount? (I'm wondering what meijer policy is about this) I am asking it because I read in a post here saying that Target doesn't make a criminal charge for below 20 dollars stuffs.

I know I made a mistake and was so stupid. I'll never do it again whatever happens in this case.
    Thanks again, aaron.

They can file charges if they wish. I suspect that they did not.
