Default Shoplifting and Green Card Application

About eight years ago, I was caught with shoplifting (<$40) by a NJ K-mart store. The store security hold me, asked me some questions, wrote down my personal information (name, address, ssn etc), and told me not to visit the store for one year (I don't remember if I was given a paper for not). Then he let me go. No police was called, and I did not get a ticket or get called by any type of law enforcement agencies afterwards. I don't have any previous record. Now I am to apply for my green card, and I want to know if immigration can find about this incident.
Should I go to my local police station to check if there is an record of this incident? I am depressed since the FBI needs to do name check during the green card application process and I don't know if this incident will negate my application.
Please please help me.Any body knows something please help me
    thanks

If the courts and police were not involved, there's no incident (arrest, charge, citation, prosecution, etc.) to report to the USCIS. Odds are there is no record outside of the store.
