    Default Indecent Exposure Closure

In 2005, when I was 18 and in high school, I was charged with 6 counts of indecent exposure in Iowa . After hiring a lawyer, she got the county attorney to bargain it down to one count, 2 years probation, a fine, and sex offender termination at the end of the probation if I agreed to plead guilty. In Iowa indecent exposure is a crime that is registerable as a sex offense. The judge. and county attorney didn't want this to ruin my life so I was granted a deferred judgement, which after completion of probation would be able to be sealed.

Fast foward a two years later and I am now finished with probation, the court records have been sealed. One would think that the state would need to hold up to their end of the plea bargain. But they're not. I am still being told I need to register and that there is nothing I can do.

I feel like completely scared now that I am realizing I might need to register for the next 8 years. Is there anything anyone has heard of that is similiar to this? I want off, I feel like that state lied to me and should be required to hold up there end of the deal. I am also teriffied of what this is going to do for job prospects in two years when I get out of college.

A couple of things that have been suggested so far are asking the judge to write a strong letter to the DCI. In sending the application for determination to the DCI include the strong letter, letters from all the people that will attest to how I am good citizen, and the plea agreement. If anyone knows anything I can do including motions, calls, letters, etc please help. I really just want to have this matter closed and over. Thanks

It happens quite a bit. Sex offender registries are typically maintained separately from criminal conviction records, and one can be "convicted" for purposes of a sex offender registry even if the criminal charge is deferred and dismissed or expunged.
