Default Is Employee Monitoring Software Legal in the U.S

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: CA
Hello. I work in a small team in SF (not IT), and our owner wants to install software to monitor productivity. According to him, this software does not make screenshots/videos or collect personal information. Is this legal?

Does the owner want to install that software on company owned devices?

Then it's legal. It would also be legal if they wanted it installed on your personal computer if it was used to connect to their network for work purposes.

I assume you mean the owner of the company for which you work. In any event, outside of putting cameras in dressing rooms, there's nothing illegal about an employer monitoring what an employee is doing while the employee is on the clock. Even if the monitoring software made screenshots/videos or collected "personal information" (which shouldn't exist on company owned computers), it would be legal.

Do you know what is that software excactly? Most time-trackers tracking opened processes (and websites!) only. So, time-tracker is legal thing, granting access to your webcam isn't.

That is the issue of remote work, employees use their own computers.

It is legal if it is a COMPANY OWNED machine in the workplace.

I'm not sure why you're responding to my post, that was a response to the OP, when you're not the OP.

Not where I work. I've been working remotely since March, using a computer issued to me by my employer. Sure, it may be true some places that employees use their own computers, but it's not universally true.

    Thanks everyone for answers.
Employee monitoring software is legal in CA, and looks like our owner`s solution (www.worktime.com if someone interested) is not so bad, as we expected.
    Anyway, Thanks everyone again
