    Angry Landlord Has Not Provided Us with Renewed Lease Copy

    My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Missouri

    Under our old lease, it stated that the tenant has 2 days to get the utlities put into their names, and we did. However, when our old lease expired and we renewed it, our landlord increased the rent but did not provide us with a renewed lease copy. Our landlord is trying to evict us for not paying a water bill that is not in our name. We tried on several occasions to pay the bill but the water company would not give us any information about the bill, because it was not in our name. Are we responsible for the bill, if we dont have a lease copy?

    If the landlord did not provide you with a new lease then the language in the previous lease would be important as to the water bill.

    What does that mean?

    Did you sign a renewal lease? If you did, then you had the lease in your hand at some point. Why didn't you make a copy for yourself before giving it back? You've got a camera in your phone, don't you?

    Or did something else happen? Details count.

    Explain how you were willing to pay the water company but not the landlord? Did the landlord give you the water bill? Was it in line with what you had been paying for water?

    We renewed and signed the lease via DocuSign. We never had the paper lease in our hands.

    Under our old lease we were required to put the utilities in our name, in which we did, we attempted to pay that bill several times, and when they asked for my name and account number, they said that the bill was not in the name that we gave; and would not give us any information about the account.

    We renewed the lease by signing it via DocuSign. The landlord never informed us to reput the utilities in our name after we renewed the lease. We never received a copy either.

    We were willing to pay the water company because the utilities were in our name under our first lease. When we renewed we did not know that we had to reput the utilities back in our name, because we never physically saw the new lease we just signed everything electronically. We still donít have a lease copy.

    The document was on the screen in front of you. You could have taken a screen shot of each section and saved it or photographed it with your cell phone.

    As for the water bill, yes, you are still responsible for it, so pay it.

    If the water bill is not in your name whose name is it in? How many tenants reside in the home besides the landlord? And what do you mean the landlord is trying to evict you? What has he done to that end?

    You can go back into DocuSign and see/print out your lease.

    I'm also confused about the water bill. It seems that you have HAD a lease that required you to pay utilities, so I assume the water bill WAS in your name. Correct?

    If somehow the water bill was changed to someone elses name and they won't give you details, you should be able to go to water company with lease in hand and have the water switched over to your name. That would let your landlord know that you are going to take care of it.

    If your landlord has an owners agreement with the water company they will send him the arrears, and you can repay him for that.
