BTW - My traffic lawyer got me off when I was 100% guilty. Though 'amazing,' was that a good thing or a bad thing?
A good thing. It means that clearly (1) the lawyer did a good job for you and that (2) the state couldn't meet its burden of proving you guilty. Even the guilty have the right to have the state prove their guilt, and if the state can't do it, the guilty person is free to go. Our system was set up on the premise that it's better to have a system in which a guilty person might go free than it is that an innocent person be punished for something he did not do. Your result reflects that premise. Obviously we still end up convicting some innocent persons in our system anyway, but less innocent persons are convicted than would be the case if the rules made it even easier for the state.
