Care to give an example where a state court actually violated federal tax law? I certainly have my share of badly drafted state court orders and agreements, and some in which all the parties and the court were clueless about tax law, but when the court is presented with the right tax law the courts in my experience have always been willing to conform their orders to the law.

In any event, an order to divorcing couple to file a joint income tax return for a year in which they are eligible to do so would not be in any way contrary to federal tax law.
