My question involves business law in the state of Missouri.
Myself and several volunteers are looking to hold a slapping contest, much like the tournaments seen on television. Because the nature of the contest involves bodily harm, much like boxing, I was curious about the legality of advertising it publicly.
I was planning on charging a $10 contestant entry fee, with free spectating. A prize trophy was to be given, along with medals for the runner-ups. I notice that frequently the difference between legality and illegality is whether cash is being collected, so if this practice is illegal I am fully invested in holding it for free.
Is this illegal in any way? On a side note, if I create a waiver that if signed claims the signature owner removes all liability for physical damage from the tournament, is it legally binding? Or do I have to have something else to obtain a document that officially exonerates the tournament of liability?
