Angry Walmart Loss Prevention Took My Tag Number, I Never Entered the Building

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland.

I was waiting outside a Walmart store in Maryland for someone to come out and was parked near the front of the store. I was not parked in any fire lanes, and there were no signs stating no parking or standing, nor was I in the striped area for pedestrians. A loss prevention guy (at least, I assume that's what he was... he had a yellow reflective vest but no other identifying material) told me I had to move and I was in a fire lane, I told him I would not move because I was waiting for someone. He told me a second time to move, I declined. He wrote down my tag number and walked away. Not more than a minute later, my passenger came out of the store and entered my car, and we drove off.

What, exactly, can they do with my tag number? Was this just an overzealous loss prevention officer?

What you describe sounds like a parking lot attendant, not loss prevention and you have no basis to suggest that you have any right to park or wait anywhere on their property when they tell you not to. If police had been called you possibly could have been arrested and your car impounded for refusing to move. Not only can they dictate where you stop, but some businesses can also require that you not loiter in your car. For example, casinos frequently will not allow anyone to sit in their car while parked in their lot.

Your tag number could possibly be used for a police report or for future reference maybe to tow, give you a trespass order or whatever. The point is that you are a guest on private property and must either follow directions, leave or face potential consequences.

No, but you were still in the vehicle movement area and impeding traffic.

It's not easy to drive around ignorant inconsiderate slobs like you when vehicles are coming from the other direction.

The employee was right to tell you to move and you were dead wrong for not moving. You could have parked in a space and driven to the front of the store when your party came out.

I guess ignorant inconsiderate slobs don't think about stuff like that.

I'm sure thousands of things can be done with the number, but it's likely that nothing will come from it.

Unlikely. Sounds like like it was a property owner or agent thereof seeking to regulate how the parking lot was used. He said you were in a fire lane; you said you weren't, but the property owner gets to decide who gets to park where.
