If you have ever read Jack London's "Sea Wolf", you may recall the discussion of Wolf Larson's highly literate erudition. London proclaims that all a poor sailor has is his intelligence, and, that he often develops that intelligence very very highly, by reading; so, you see, that is simply what happened with me too!
