Default Accidentally Talked to Someone Underage

I was chatting online, someone messaged me, very quickly after sent a dirty pic and claimed he was 17 (profile said 19). I immediately said bye and blocked him and deleted the app entirely.

Is there potential for me to get in trouble? I didn't intend to talk to anyone underage.

COULD you get in trouble? Slim maybe. WILL you? Probably not.

If what you wrote was all that happened, and you never solicited for the pic and do not possess or have not downloaded any questionable messages or images of minors, you should have nothing to worry about. Beware, because if they have your email or other contact info from your now-deleted profile, then you may get an extortion attempt message asking for money or they'll go to the police. The messeger could claim to be a parent or authority figure, and it'll be bogus.

Best bet? Stay away from those meat market messaging/social media sites. Meet people the time-honored way - in person.

No. If things happened the way you say, (and I have no reason to disbelieve you) there is no potential for you to get into trouble.

However, there is a fairly common scam where you would subsequently get a message from someone claiming to be the parent of the minor and threatening you if you do not pay some money. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IF YOU DO NOT PAY. You will not be sued, you will not be reported to the police, you will not face any charges of any kind. This is a scam.

Just delete the phone number and if you get any further messages, ignore them.

ETA: Carl, I owe you a beer.

Well I did ask for a pic, but it was well before he disclosed they lied about their age. I of course didn't save anything and immediately blocked them

LOL! I'll take a latte when/if we get out your way. With Comic Con being cancelled, if summer opens up the nation, maybe this summer!

Best to do what you did and drop the connection, delete, and ignore. But, keep in mind that all those connect sites are rife with scams, schemes, and all manner of extortion attempts. Not a week goes by that we don't get a report from someone has communicated on those sites and then received some questionable or even outright criminal responses.

Nothing beats meeting people in person. It works. Okay, maybe not during a virtual lockdown, but, normally it does.
