    Default Elder Law

My question involves a person located in the state of: Florida

My mother-in-law moved to the US in 2002 and received her green card in 2004 (approx). She has lived with us the last 8 years as she could not manage on her own. She has health insurance as she does not qualify for either medicare or medicaid. She is experiencing rapid onset of dementia. We can currently manage but, if her mental condition continues to deteriorate at the current rate, this will change in the not too distant future. Her insurance provides short term care but nothing for long term. She has 75-80k in assets.

Are there any programs either at the federal or state level that provide any long term care options for people in these situations?

She has assets to pay for care. Based on my area, this is about one year of care in a memory care facility. Then she may qualify for Medicaid. You should look at in-home care assistance. Some states provide this to families because family care is less expensive than facility care. Speak with an elder law/care specialist to develop a plan. Your area likely has a social service agency serving the elderly and disabled.

Which will have to be used for her own care before the taxpayers pay for any.
