I would tend to agree with you in principle, but it is not incorrect. The OED shows the use as a verb going back to the 1800's.
Prior to 1/1/1978 it was properly used as a verb because, under the Copyright Act of 1909 (the predecessor to the Copyright Act of 1976) and the earlier Copyright Acts, copyrights did not exist (at least not at the federal level) in the absence of formalities.

Typically, when folks use "copyright" as a verb, they are talking about registration.

Many thanks for the excellent replies.
I'll reply in more detail shortly...
(And no, I'm not affiliated with the website I mentioned... if I was, I should be fired for such a pathetic attempt at marketing!)

The concept of copyright in the law and its usage in English predates the Copyright act of 1909. As with much of US law, the term and the concept of the right dates back to the early 1700's when the first British Copyright acts were passed. Internationally, it was codified in Berne in 1886, which alas the US was one of the last states to ratify in the 1980s. You can carp about verbing nouns all you want but in both the linguistic and legal sense, copyright has been both a noun and verb for longer than the two of us have been around. While the noun has been around since the early 1700's, the use as a verb dates from the mid 1800's. You can complain all you want, but it is NOT incorrect.

What is correct is writing it as "copywrite."

I meant isn't correct, unless you're talking about a low level editor at a newspaper.
