Fake Messages

My question involves defamation in the state of: Tennessee

Someone is using a fake text message app and making text that look like they are from me. Using my phone number and is showing them to people. I have a copy of one of the messages that was sent to someone who does not know me and it looks like I am making threats. Is there anything I can do?

Start by reporting it to the police. There may be a crime in there some place. Hacking, maybe.

Then send messages to everybody in your phone contacts and email contacts that you have been hacked and tell them that any strange looking messages do not come to you and they should let you know immediately if they get one.

Two of my friends were hacked that way.

Generally, what happens is if you don't make a big deal of it and nobody responds to the fake messages, the hacker moves on to where he can upset people.

On the other hand, that might not be the case if it's somebody you know that you have had hostilities with.
