Default Does Child Support Have to be Paid Through a State Agency

I was told that in Texas you MUST pay all child support through the given government/state system (what ever that is were you live).
I was told that IF, I made payments to my ex directly (in any form) it would not count as forms of Child Support (if my ex chose to raise the issue) because the state was unable to tack it directly.
