    Default Petty Theft

I committed a petty theft crime when I was 19 years old, hanging out and doing the wrong things with the wrong people. I was given probation of community service (100 hours) and completed my probation. I am now 27 and about to finish my master degree and have maintained a clean record. No moving violations...plain clean since!

My question is, I am about to graduate and will be looking for jobs...will the employers see my petty theft crime? And would it be possible to have it removed/expunged from my records? Any help or susggestion will greatly help!

    Thank you in advance!

    Joe

From what you say, you have a criminal record. That can be revealed by a background check. Expungement laws are different in each state.

Its been 8 years! many employers who run background checks only go back 7 years! when you fill out applications read the section that states how far back! In meantime as Aaron states consult an Attorney and find out about expungment and if it will work for you

Thanks for the reply Aaron, this is in California. I am not sure if I can get some sort of help in helping me clear this up since it has been 8 years.

I have heard of that, but I am unsure if employers will even do 7 year background checks. I was reading an article on MSN and it states that employers are even going further back in regards to background checks.

I am going to look for an attorney and perhaps consult with them and see what they can do

When filling out appication and questions about criminal history come up look at timeframe they ask. Many read "Have you been convicted of a crime within the last (fill in the blank) years?" If its 7 or less years you can safely answer no!
