    Post Financial Agreement for Certification

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Kentucky, Indiana
My employer paid for me to obtain a certification and in December of 2018, I obtained the certification. Now, two months later, they want me to sign a financial agreement to repay the fees if I terminate employment within one year of the certification. They have recently cut hours to 30 per week, and I feel this is an attempt to intimidate me from considering other offers for better employment. What should I do?

I can't think of any reason to sign it IF you are even thinking about leaving. They screwed themselves. They should of had you sign that before you did the certification.

Have an attorney review the financial agreement. This is really not an uncommon thing; having invested in your education, they'd like you to stay around long enough for them to get some benefit of it.

If there was no agreement prior to the class and it was never discussed, you are free to say no. They are then free to fire you.

No one should be offering an opinion about what you "should do," and you should not care what any anonymous stranger who posts here things you "should do." All we can really tell you is that you're under no legal obligation to sign, but your employer could legally fire you for not signing.

Like the man says, I can't tell you what you should do but I can tell you what I would do (and have done). I would say no and if I got fired I would immediately file for unemployment. I would make sure that my certificate was safely at home.
