    I think that you can make the argument that he abandoned the lease when he left months ago. I would not let him back in the apartment and in fact would change the locks on the off chance that he still has a key.

    The furniture is an iffier proposition. If its really good furniture like that I would try to find some place to store it until he can pick it up, assuming that he does so within 30 days.
