Default When Do I Stop Being a Permanent Resident

I have a green card, and my first re-entry permit that expires this month, I have decided not to return to the US to apply for my second one, and therefore let my green card go.
I am curious though- when do I actually stop being a permanent resident, or has that already happened? I have a 10-year green card that expires next year.

Default Re: When Do I Stop Being a Permanent Resident

If you want to formally surrender your permanent residency, file form I-407.

If you don't change your mind about abandoning permanent residency in the U.S., it's not an issue. If you later change your mind and decide to try to reclaim permanent residency, one would have to look at the facts as they exist at that time, but you should work from the assumption that it won't be possible.
