Default Sending Nude Pics to Minors Through Apps

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Washington

My boyfriend (who was intoxicated) was on Grindr and began a conversation with another user. The user asked for his number which my boyfriend gave. A few hours later that user texts my boyfriend. My boyfriend asked the user for a pic. The user sent a nude pic and my boyfriend responded with a nude pic. It turns out the user was a minor.

A few days later the dad, who is in South Carolina calls and leaves a voicemail on his phone saying that they “just returned from Seattle and my wife found out that our son was on Grindr and chatted with you.” I then stepped in and talked to the father who after 10 mins of talking stated “we just want to put this behind us by throwing our tablet in the garbage but can’t afford to get new ones.” I stated that that’s unfortunate and the call ended with the dad unsure what to do. A few days later the dad calls again wondering what we wanted to do about this “situation” and states that they need my boyfriend to send money to South Carolina (where they live) so that they can get a new tablet. If my boyfriend doesn’t do this they are going to file a police report.

    Any advice?

And your so-called boyfriend needs to stay off random hookup sites and stop sending nude photos to people he does not know.

Agree. This is actually a very common scam.

I appreciate your response. How do I know this is a scam? I don’t mind filing a police report myself but obviously, why go through all that is this is a scam.

You will know it isn't a scam when the police don't show up for your BF.

You have no reason or standing to file a police report unless you want to report that your BF has child porn on his phone.

Just block the number and don't worry about it.

We know it's a scam because dozens and dozens- maybe hundreds? - of people have come here with exactly the same story. It's also been in the news, a lot. It's def a scam.

Even if true, which it is not, that in and of itself is illegal, generally called Compounding a crime.

Even if true, which it is not, concealing the fact from the law after knowledge of it, is also a crime.
