Default Homeowner Insurance Discounts for Alarm Systems

My question involves insurance law for the state of: Florida

Do homeowners qualify for potential discounts on their insurance policy if they simply install any type of alarm system or are there certain guidelines that must be followed (e.g. including smoke detectors, etc.)?

Generally, yes, but depends on the insurance company.

As you can see by the following standard homeowners application you will be asked details about the type of alarm:

    http://www.njiua.org/windmap/forms/H...ccord%2080.pdf

Look toward the middle of the page where it says "Protection Device Type."

I understand now. So, merely having a basic alarm system installed does not guarantee any discount on your policy.

Doesn't guarantee it but probably would get one.

I get a discount for smoke alarms.

I had a house a while back where I had sensors on doors and windows and a loud alarm that got a discount. It wasn't fancy and not monitored but it got a discount.

Keep in mind that homeowners insurance is not very expensive if your house qualifies for competitive rates with preferred insurance companies so large discounts are already built into the policy. Additional discounts amount to a few dollars.

Many insurance companies will give additional discounts if you have your car and home insurance in the same company.

I suppose I'm wondering if there is a greater discount for adding certain components (e.g. smoke, carbon detection) to your home alarm system?

Why don't you talk with your insurance agent about this?
