If you do check a bag and want to make sure that it is tracked from start to finish, pack a starter pistol in your bag and declare it when you check the bag. The bag will be tracked and monitored until the moment you collect it. (You can't do that with a carry-on as starter pistols can't go into the cabin of the plane.)

I have transported firearms in checked baggage. It's inspected and labeled and treated like royalty for the whole trip.

A have I and a saw the same thing. I never thought about doing to for security of what would otherwise be non-firearms holding bags.

I am SOOOO going to do that.

Of course, you'd better make sure the destination is non a firearms-hostile state like NY. You can get arrested and charged with a felony for claiming a bag containing such (and this has happened even when the flight was diverted to NY from a safe state).

Agreed but you could use the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act as an affirmative defense.

I don't think that would help if the state is the final destination. If it were a layover or switching flights, yes.
