If you are mentally competent, the court cannot compel you to accept a court-appointed lawyer. But, although rarely done, the court can appoint a lawyer to serve in an advisory capacity.
One way or another, if you're charged with a crime it's a very good idea to have a lawyer to assist you with your defense.
