Do I need to get a lawyer?

My sons father has a preliminary conference coming up soon (for nonpayment of child support). The courts sent me a paper stating that I have to be there. My question is- Should I hire a lawyer to be with me? I live in Kentucky. Any advice is appreciated, Thanks.

If the purpose of the hearing is merely collections, with no dispute over the amount of the arrearage, I doubt that you would need a lawyer. If there are complications you have not disclosed, or if they are also seeking to modify child support, you may wish to consult a lawyer.

I believe he is facing felony charges because he is more than $10,000 in arrears for child support. (My son is 12 years old now and this has been going on for a long time.) The last payment I received from him was in Feb. 2005, then he quit his job and fell off the face of the earth. I've had a warrant out for his arrest since Feb.2006. The police finally caught up to him and served him a couple of weeks ago. I'm unsure if he was served a summons or if he was arrested. I have tried to call the correctional facility but they just keep giving me the run around.
