If you file for bankruptcy, will that keep your power from being disconnected?
You can stop the collection of your past debt, and potentially discharge the money that you owe for the power bill through the date that you file your bankruptcy case, but you must pay any bills that are due after the date of your filing.
The bankruptcy code gives a utility company the right to seek adequate security for future payment -- See 11 U.S.C. Sec. 366. Once you provide that security, your utility company must continue your power as long as you keep paying your bills.
