Default Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check

My first job out of college lasted for 9 months. I hated it and wanted to go back to school for my Masters, but instead of quiting, slacked off so id get terminated and collect some unemployment. I know, really smart. Upon termiantion, my employer stated that " I was young with a long career ahead and it would be ok to list this job on my resume"

    Heres my questions:
    1. Can a background check uncover collection of unemployment? Is it public record?

    2. SHould I call my old boss and ask specifically if what he meant was that he wouldnt say i was terminated.

If the collection of unemployment is private info, and my old boss wont say I was fired, im good to go,,but I dont want to get lie and get caught.

Right - don't lie when answering employment questions. They can come back & haunt you.

Background checks are usually criminal ones not your employment history. Your employment history hirings, firings, resignations, lay offs should be on your job application and a good interviewer will ask for details! If during interview you were not asked then I would not worry. that being said the best advice was alaready give don't lie!

Collecting unemployment is not a matter of public record. However, the WORST thing you can possibly do in a job interview is lie about why you left. Your boss may not be there forever and future managers may not be willing to lie for you. HR may not be willing to LET your boss lie for you.

Additionally, I have had information about employees fall into my lap when I wasn't even looking for it. There is no guaranteed that even if you get through the reference check unscathed, that a future employer may not find out the truth anyway. Bingo! You're unemployed again, and this time you have to explain how you got fired for lying.

I particularly like the part where you were willing to fraudulently collect UI, and now you want assurances that you won't get caught by virtue of that collection. As you say, real smart.

Isn't the information a former employer gives, limited to the start and finish dates of employment?
