Default AFNI Inc. Collections of Old Debt

Yesterday, 4/10/07 I received a letter from a collection agency in Illinois. I live in Tennessee. It stated that in 1996 I had a phone sercive with Verizon North in Greencastle Indiana and the bill was for $218. This did not sound familiar to me so I called immediately. The lady said it was from an old phone bill from GTE-Bell North and Verizon bought them out. I do not remember such a phone service however it is 11 years ago and I really do not remember. The lady said I had 30 days to either disprove the bill or show why I should not pay it and if not they will put it on my credit report, which I do not want. Is there a statute of limitaitons here? I thought it credit reports can only show deragatory information for 7 yrs? I am not sure what to do at this point? Any advice is appriciated,
    Thanks
    Billy

Can you identify the collection agency which contacted you? This sounds like the tactics of a junk debt buyer.

Googling them by name along with "junk debt" produces a lot of reports of similar actions. Send them a letter asking them not to contact you again. If they actually try to add the debt to your credit report, dispute it on the basis of the age of the debt, and report them to the FTC.

You are right, they are a junk debt buyer. There were many article on them and Verizon. All the articles were negative in nature. I called Verizon North in Indiana and they have no record of me ever having phone service. They looked up the number and has never had my name tied to the phone number. I mailed out a certified letter with signature return to these people, just as you suggested.
How do these people get away with this?

    Thanks,
    Billy
